High on a cliff in Franconia Notch, jutting out above tranquil Profile Lake, is a natural stone formation which seems to be the profile of a man of deep character. The wilderness beauty of the Old Man's setting has been cherished as an integral part of the experience. It has been threatened many times, by exposure, loggers and a highway.
