The Poverty of Philosophy was written as a response to Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's The Philosophy of Poverty. Although Marx greatly respected Proudhon, especially in his earlier days, this criticism of Proudhon's book disagrees with many of his points. Marx goes so far as to mock the success of Proudhon's career. Marx's book contains some seeds of his thoughts that would later be fully realized in Capital.
